From yoga wheels to vibration plates, the wellness market is booming, with retailers like Amazon and Walmart capitalizing on unprecedented demand. Analysts predict the industry will hit $9 trillion by 2028, redefining how we approach health, fitness, and self-care.

Hold onto your yoga mats, folks! Despite inflationary price trends and tariffs, major retailers such as Amazon and Walmart are seeing their wellness categories grow. From water bottles and recovery gummies to yoga wheels and vibration plates, the wellness and fitness lifestyle is red hot right now.

While these categories and even adopting a wellness lifestyle aren’t new, what is new is the number of consumers practicing it. In fact, analysts are describing wellness as the “new luxury.”

Research from the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) shows that the global wellness economy isn’t just thriving; it’s absolutely booming, reaching a remarkable 5.9% annual growth rate last year. In the GWI’s Global Wellness Economy Monitor 2024, which was unveiled at the Global Wellness Summit (GWS) last fall, researchers paint a vibrant picture of an industry that has not only weathered the pandemic but has emerged significantly stronger. Today, the global wellness market is worth a staggering $6.3 trillion (£4.9 trillion/€5.8 trillion). To put that into perspective, that’s a 26% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2020, when the figure stood at $4.6 trillion.

And the momentum isn’t stopping there. Experts predict this incredible growth trajectory will continue, forecasting a record-breaking $9 trillion by 2028. These figures highlight the undeniable power and pervasiveness of wellness in our modern lives.

The sheer scale of the wellness economy is truly impressive. It’s now roughly four times larger than the global pharmaceutical industry (which stands at $1.6 trillion) and nearly 60 percent bigger than all consumer health expenditures ($10.6 trillion). In fact, the spa and wellness sector alone is now larger than industries like pharmaceuticals, IT, tourism, and even the green economy.

This isn’t just about niche trends; wellness is becoming an increasingly significant part of the overall global economy. It now represents more than 6% of global GDP, up from 5.75% in 2019. Looking at regional growth, every corner of the globe has seen expansion in its wellness markets between 2019 and 2023. Leading the charge are North America (now at 137% of its 2019 market), the Middle East-North Africa (at 130%), and Europe (at 125%).

What is Wellness, Exactly?

Wellness, rooted in ancient traditions from civilizations like India, China, Greece, and Rome, emphasizes holistic and preventive care, according to the GWI. In 19th-century Europe and the U.S., movements advocating natural healing and self-care emerged alongside conventional medicine, laying the groundwork for modern wellness. Since the 1960s/1970s, the writings of thinkers such as Halbert Dunn, Jack Travis, and others have further shaped the concept, driving today’s thriving wellness movement that encompasses fitness, nutrition, self-care, and spiritual practices.

A wellness lifestyle isn’t just a fleeting trend; it’s a conscious and ongoing pursuit of holistic health and well-being. It’s about making daily choices that support your physical, mental, and emotional flourishing, rather than simply the absence of disease. Think of it as an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more fulfilling and balanced life.

So, what exactly does a wellness lifestyle encompass?

It’s a multi-faceted approach that typically includes:

  • Nourishing one’s body: This involves making informed food choices, prioritizing whole foods, staying hydrated, and understanding your body’s nutritional needs.
  • Moving your body: Regular physical activity, whether it’s structured exercise or simply incorporating more movement into your day, is crucial for both physical and mental health.
  • Nurturing your mind: This includes practices that promote mental clarity, reduce stress, and enhance emotional resilience, such as mindfulness, meditation, or engaging in creative pursuits.
  • Connecting with others: Strong social connections and a sense of belonging are vital for overall well-being. Cultivating meaningful relationships and engaging with your community are key aspects.

A holistic wellness lifestyle also includes getting adequate rest, managing stress effectively, and creating a supportive environment, which includes your physical surroundings and the people you surround yourself with, fostering a sense of safety and well-being.

The benefits of embracing a wellness lifestyle are profound and far-reaching. Practitioners might experience:

  • Improved physical health: This can manifest as increased energy levels, a stronger immune system, better sleep, and a reduced risk of chronic diseases.
  • Enhanced mental and emotional well-being: You may find yourself feeling more resilient, less stressed, happier, and with a greater sense of purpose.
  • Increased productivity and focus: When you feel good both physically and mentally, your ability to concentrate and perform tasks often improves.
  • Stronger relationships: Investing in your well-being can positively impact your interactions with others, fostering deeper connections.

It’s important to note that adopting a wellness lifestyle is a journey, not a destination. It’s about making small, sustainable changes over time that align with your individual values and needs. An empowering approach that puts you in the driver’s seat of your own well-being.

Business Opportunities?

If you are a wellness and fitness lifestyle practitioner who loves what you do, you may want to consider turning it into a career by starting your own business. In a recent article in Athletech News, Josh Liberatore writes, “Despite some negative headlines and a fraught macroeconomic environment, the fitness and wellness franchising industry is as robust as ever.”

Liberatore notes that big box gyms, wellness centers, and pilates studios are on the rise. “The business of hot and cold is booming, too,” he notes.  “Perspire Sauna Studio, which offers infrared sauna and red-light therapy, is expanding quickly, with over 55 open studios and 200 signed franchise agreements as the brand eyes 500 locations by 2027.”

The message is clear: wellness is a fundamental value driving consumer behavior and economic growth worldwide. This relentless momentum suggests a future where well-being is even more deeply integrated into our daily lives and the global economy.
